January feels different for teachers. It’s not a fresh start, it’s a reset. Here’s how we see you, support you, and show up for you all year long.

And one small way I love to support you all year long
For most people, January feels like a fresh start. The new year rolls in with all the usual talk about resolutions and goal setting. Gyms are fuller than full and people’s grocery carts seem to have a LOT more veggies and a lot less cookies and chips in them. There’s talk of sticking to budgets and exercise plans. Dreams and goals get dusted off and new plans are put into place.
But for teachers, January has a very different energy.
Your “new year” starts in August or September when your classroom fills with fresh supplies, new faces, and big hopes for a great year. By the time January hits, you’re not starting over. You’re picking up where you left off, nudging sleepy students back into routines, and maybe wondering how it’s already second semester.
If you spent last month shifting between grading papers and wrapping presents, prepping lesson plans and planning holiday meals, you’re not alone. And if your students returned a little more sugared-up and sleep-deprived than you hoped… also not alone.
You might be feeling like ALL the hard work you did to establish routines and get your classroom – and your students – humming along was lost. I mean, how can eating way too many sugar cookies and playing way too many video games and staying up way too late for two weeks do so much damage?! 🙄
The good news? You’ve got this. You’ve been here before. And you know what you and your students need in January. And it’s not a list of resolutions.
January for teachers is less “New Year, New You” and more “Let’s get back into the groove.”
It’s a reset. A return. A re-entry into the beautiful, messy rhythm of teaching.
And if no one has said it yet, let me. Thank you.
- Thank you for showing up when the days are short and the to-do lists are long.
- Thank you for bringing your full heart and steady presence to students who need both.
- Thank you for making classrooms feel like home, even in the middle of winter.
